Study Abroad Brighton

I had a great expierience. I found the study abroad team in particular so helpful. Zoe and Mary were so so helpful during the application process and I really appreciated their efforts! I love this city of Brighton. It is a great place to be a student. There is always so much to do, from going to the beach, to shopping in the lanes. Falmer is a nice little campus. It is quiet and it has a nice vibe to it. I would absolutely reccomened this program and I am so so glad that I did it. It was very memorable!

What was your funniest moment?
The seagulls attacking us for food!
Pros
  • Study abroad staff are so supportive
  • I feel very safe on both campuses
  • The class sizes make the learning enviornment better
Cons
  • Falmer campus is a bit far from anything
  • I do wish there were some more fun events during orientation, more oppurtunities to make more friends within the program

Study Abroad Brighton

I couldn’t have been more appreciative of this experience. If I could relive it all over again, I would in a heartbeat. I honestly feel like I found my second home! I got lucky and never felt homesick, if anything I feel like I’m going to feel homesick when I go back to the United States. Without the help of USAC and the International Students team at the University of Brighton, this experience would not be what it was. I highly recommend anyone who is thinking about studying abroad in Brighton to go ahead and go for it!

I love the University of Brighton

Brighton is an amazing city to study in. Public transportation is easy to navigate and can get you anywhere. There is amazing shopping, nightlife, public green space, and restaurant options. It’s lively but not crowded and the people here are wonderful. Being right on the coast is wonderful. The air is clean and salty and the beach/pier is so fun to visit. You will never run out of things to do in Brighton.
The university itself has an excellent course options all with talented, professional, and kind professors. As an international student there was a learning curve for me in navigating online resources and adjusting to cultural norms but it was easy for me to ask for help. The student body is full of passionate people who create insightful class discussions and myriad opportunities to make friends. I’ve loved studying here and I will be sad to see the semester come to an end.

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Get ready for baked beans on everything in England. Beans on toast for and English Breakfast are good, but beans in a baked potato are… not my favorite.
Pros
  • Public transportation
  • Support network
  • Program planned excursions/field trips

My Experience Studying Abroad

For my semester abroad, I wanted to find a location that was English speaking but wasn’t a super populated city, and I found Brighton! This was absolutely the perfect fit for me, I get all the positives of the city, countryside, and nightlife that I could possibly want. Our program staff were incredibly helpful at helping us with the culture shift, and made it feel like we had family here if we needed it. The inclusion of field trips also allowed for friendships to easily blossom and I now have super close friends that I am dreading leaving. The only thing that I wish was different was our accommodation location. The Falmer campus is quite far from the coast, which makes traveling to go to the beach, stores, or classes more time consuming and decreases the likelihood of me going out. I would rather pay more to live closer to the action then feel farther away. Besides the living situation, I only have positive things to say about this program!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
Black pudding and haggis!
Pros
  • Friendship building
  • getting out of your comfort zone
  • immersing yourself in new culture
Cons
  • living accommodation

SPECTACULAR EXPERIENCE

My experience here at the University of Brighton was one that was truly unforgettable and I will be greatful for it for the rest of my life. My study abroad has given me life long friends and the ability to know that whereever I am in the world I will succeed, meet amazing people and most importantly I will thrive. Although there were hard times when I felt like I wanted to go home or I needed to be within my comfort zone I am so glad that I kept going so I could continue to have the amazing days. All in all, I am so thankful that I did this and I would not trade a second of this experience for the world!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
My most nerve-racking moment was heading to the airport and preparing for my flight while not knowing anyone in the program and entering this experience completely on my own. I overcame this moment by journaling and reminding myself constantly that this is something that I wanted and I was going to be so greatful of who I became once I was on the other side.
Pros
  • Friendships
  • Travel
  • So many places to look forward to coming back to!!
Cons
  • Missing things at home
  • So much money spent (but so many memories made!!)

Great Experience

I enjoyed the organised field trips that allowed me to visit places that may have been hard to get to on my own or that I may not have even known of. This also allowed me to go out of my comfort zone and gain the confidence to later explore more outside of Brighton on my own. I felt very safe in my city in general but even more safe with the knowledge that I had resources to help me and people to talk to if I needed. I would absolutely recommend going abroad to the UK, especially Brighton. It is such an accepting, artistic, and youthful city and is now one of my favorites. The one thing I was worried about before this program was figuring out public transport since I had never done it before, but I promise it is so much easier to figure out than you think. And there are so many kind, amazing people in this community that would absolutely not mind you asking any questions you need to ask, in fact they are usually eager to help and you’ll end up having some amazing chats!

What was the most unfamiliar thing you ate?
I tried beans on toast, which I was actually dreading trying. But I got advice from a friend that it’s a lot better when the toast is slathered with butter, and I definitely agree! Still maybe not my first choice, but it was good!
Pros
  • Lots of help resources
  • Many opportunities to travel and explore with the group and alone
  • A really exciting city that always has different things to do
Cons
  • Can be expensive

Review

I have had such a great time here!! My classes have been engaging and challenging just the way I like. My accommodation has also been amazing it has been so nice to make myself at home in a comfortable clean place. This experience has been made better because of all of the staff and resources available to me. I love all of the nature that is free and easily accessible to experience. The beach being so close is also very nice - so many places to take some time alone or with friends. I have had an easy time recharging my social battery to go back out and have more fun!

What was the most nerve-racking moment and how did you overcome it?
Definitely the transportation and other culture shock aspects. My advice is to jump right in! And always ask questions the locals are always nice and helpful and once you get the hang of it, it will feel easy!
Pros
  • Great accommodation
  • Great people
  • Great food
Cons
  • Long way from airport
  • Living in falmer- away from city center
  • Too many temptations to spend money

My Review

This experience has been great overall and I’m so glad I was able to study abroad at the University of Brighton. Coming in alone to a place I had never been before was intimidating at first, but the program leaders and Study Abroad Officers made me feel right at home upon my arrival. The city is Brighton is also refreshing to be a part of, with its rich history and creative ambiance all around. It feels bittersweet to say goodbye to this city and I will dream of the day I get to return to this beautiful place.
